A letter from a local

Winter is our summer. Plan accordingly.

From November to April, Tucson might be the best outdoor city in the country: 70 degrees, saguaros throwing long shadows, and the 131-mile Loop path stitching the whole valley together for road bikes. The 50-Year Trail and Tucson Mountain Park serve up desert singletrack that stays tacky all winter.

Mt. Lemmon is the escape hatch — a paved climb from cactus to pines that road cyclists make pilgrimages for, with granite cragging off nearly every pullout from thirty minutes up. Sabino Canyon's trails start twenty minutes from downtown. Summer? You ride at 5am or you drive up the mountain. Everyone adapts.

Add a university, aerospace and optics jobs, and the cheapest good tacos in America, and the case makes itself — October through May, anyway.
