A letter from a local

Tahoe without the act.

Truckee is where Tahoe people actually live. The lake's resorts ring us in every direction — Palisades twenty minutes, Northstar fifteen, backcountry off Donner Summit before work — but downtown is still a railroad town with a working main street, not a lobby.

What sold me wasn't even the snow, it's the shoulder seasons: granite slabs at Donner in June, alpine lake swims in August, hero-dirt singletrack into November. The Sierra gives you all four seasons at full volume, and the eastern light at dusk turns the whole summit ridge rose-gold.

Work splits three ways here — snow science and outdoor industry, a growing remote-tech crowd that fled the Bay with their salaries intact, and everything that keeps a real town running. Reno's airport is forty minutes when you need the world.

Come up for a June weekend. Morning slab climb, afternoon swim, dinner on the patio while the alpenglow runs the ridgeline. Easiest sale I make.
