A letter from a local
Rainier owns the skyline. Eventually it owns you.
On clear days the mountain fills the end of the street like a prop. Point Defiance — 760 acres of old-growth on a peninsula, ten minutes from downtown — is where the city runs, and the Sound below it is where we paddle: seals, ferries, five-mile shoreline loops before work.
The real stuff is a commitment: Rainier's trailheads at about seventy minutes, Crystal Mountain's lifts closer to an hour forty-five. You build weekends around them and keep weekdays for the water and the park.
Tacoma is Seattle's honest sibling — port jobs, healthcare, houses that still make sense — with the better view of the mountain. We don't say that too loudly.
