Nobody brags about Spokane. Our little secret.
Riverside State Park is ten minutes from downtown — 12,000 acres of pine and basalt canyon along the Spokane River, laced with trail. That's the everyday. The Centennial Trail runs 37 miles to Idaho if the legs are good.
Winter you pick from five ski hills inside ninety minutes; Mt. Spokane is the local, about 45 minutes up. Summer it's lakes in every direction — Coeur d'Alene a half hour east — and the river itself for hot evenings.
The whole package costs about half what it would on the coast, with a real medical-and-manufacturing job base. It's an unfashionable kind of good. Fourteen years in, fashion has stopped mattering to me entirely.
