Four hundred years old, ten minutes from the trail.
The Dale Ball trails thread the piñon foothills ten minutes from the Plaza — I ride or run them at lunch and I'm back before anyone notices. Ski Santa Fe sits sixteen miles up Hyde Park Road, topping out over 12,000 feet; on a storm week it skis far bigger than its reputation.
The Winsor Trail down from the ski basin is northern New Mexico's classic ride, aspen groves the whole way. Diablo Canyon's basalt walls handle the climbing thirty minutes toward the river, and the Rio Grande's caddis hatches keep the fly rods busy forty minutes out.
This is the oldest capital in the country — adobe, art, chile, opera under the stars — at 7,200 feet with real seasons. Nowhere else pairs this much culture with this much trail.
