A letter from a local
Waterfall country with a day job.
Silver Falls State Park is thirty-five minutes east — the Trail of Ten Falls walks you behind sheets of water in a mossy canyon that looks rented from a movie. That's Salem's signature move, and locals get it on empty weekday mornings.
The Willamette runs through town with easy paddling and Minto-Brown Island's ten miles of riverside path; wine-country backroads make road cycling embarrassingly scenic in every direction. The coast at Lincoln City is 75 minutes; the Cascades' lakes and trails about an hour east — with Hood's resorts a long two hours, skiing is the trade-off here.
It's the affordable, unhurried middle of the valley: state jobs, orchard stands, and enough green within an hour to keep every weekend booked.
