Sacramento's card is the American River Parkway — 32 miles of car-free path along the water, five minutes from midtown. It's the spine of the whole outdoor life here: road miles, trail runs, swimming holes, salmon runs in the fall.
The South Fork of the American is under an hour east at Coloma — the busiest whitewater run in the West for a reason, class III fun all summer. Auburn's canyon trails are forty minutes. Tahoe is the honest weak spot: budget close to two hours to Sugar Bowl or Palisades, and go midweek.
State-government stability, a real food scene, and you can own a house. In California. With a river out back. That's the whole pitch.
