The whitewater park is downtown. The desert is next door.

Pueblo put a whitewater park on the Arkansas right through downtown — surf waves and play holes a five-minute walk from the Riverwalk's patios. Upstream, Lake Pueblo State Park wraps the reservoir with sixty miles of swoopy singletrack that rides dry nearly all winter.

Shelf Road's limestone sport climbing — hundreds of routes in a golden canyon — is fifty minutes west, with the Royal Gorge's big water on the way. Steel-city summers are hot; the river and 4,700 feet of elevation take the edge off.

Pueblo is Colorado's value play: historic neighborhoods at half Front Range prices, green chile rivaling New Mexico's, and a river town identity that predates every ski resort in the state.
