A letter from a local

Nine hundred people inside a stone amphitheater.

Ouray sits at the bottom of a near-vertical bowl of thirteen-thousand-foot peaks — the whole town fits inside one sweeping glance from the Perimeter Trail. They call it the Switzerland of America, which undersells it: Switzerland has more exits.

Winter is the Ice Park — a free, farmed canyon of ice climbing a five-minute walk from Main Street, the only thing like it anywhere. Summer brings via ferratas, alpine wildflower basins, and hot springs right in town to dissolve whatever the mountains did to you that day.

Living here is the full small-town contract: nine hundred neighbors, one school, jobs in guiding, trades, hospitality and remote laptops. You will know everyone. They will know you. That's either your dream or your nightmare — you already know which.

Come in January: climb ice all day, soak in the springs at dusk while snow falls into the steam, and look up at the rim glowing pink. Then try to leave.
