A letter from a local
A lake town that skis, a ski town on a lake.
Payette Lake is the center of gravity — glassy at dawn, ringed by ponderosa, with town beaches a walk from Main Street. Summer is paddleboard commutes and lake swims that make you gasp in July.
Brundage's famously light powder spins twenty minutes north; Jug Mountain Ranch's singletrack fifteen south; Ponderosa State Park's peninsula trails right in town. Kelly's Whitewater Park and the North Fork Payette's serious water sit down the canyon, and Burgdorf's rustic hot springs steam forty minutes into the backcountry.
Two hours from Boise but a world apart — small, seasonal, and stubbornly unfancy. Winter carnival ice sculptures and all.
