A letter from a local

Superior is a sea. We just don’t brag.

Lake Superior isn't a lake, it's an inland sea with moods, and Marquette lives right on its shoulder. Sunset off Presque Isle — sandstone cliffs, water to the horizon, light going copper — is the show I never skip. Some maniacs here surf it in winter. Respect.

The singletrack is the secret that's getting out: the Noquemanon network rolls right from town through birch and hemlock, and winter grooms it for fat bikes instead of giving up. Waterfalls in every direction, sea kayaking along the cliffs, a small ski hill that punches up.

It's a university and trades town with a growing tech-and-gear scene, and the cost of living is the punchline: lakefront life for less than a city parking spot. U.P. people are unkillable and friendly about it.

Come in late September — fall colors against blue water, trails empty midweek. Pasty in the backpack. You'll get the whole religion in one ride.
