A letter from a local
Yosemite’s porch light.
Mariposa is the last real town before Yosemite — gold-rush storefronts, one blinking light, and the park's Arch Rock entrance forty-five minutes up Highway 140 along the Merced's whitewater. El Capitan on a Tuesday morning, before the day-trippers clear Oakhurst, is a local privilege I don't take lightly.
The Merced River canyon runs green and wild all spring — rafting below, poppies on the walls, swimming holes by June. Stockton Creek's trails loop right off Main Street, and the southern Sierra's granite goes as deep as any climbing life could want.
Foothill quiet, valley grandeur, and a mortgage that doesn't require a tech job. You smell pine and river all the way home.
