A letter from a local
Winter until July, and nobody complains.
Mammoth's deal is simple: a real 11,000-foot mountain with the longest season in California — I've skied corn in shorts on the Fourth of July — attached to a town that's all of seven thousand people once the weekenders go home Sunday night.
Summer is the part visitors miss. The Lakes Basin opens up ten minutes from town: granite spires, alpine water you can actually swim in by August, singletrack down Mountain View that rearranges your priorities. Hot springs on the way home, steam rising against the Minarets at dusk.
Work is the mountain, hospitality, media and gear shops, and a remote crowd that figured out their video calls don't know they're at 7,880 feet. It's seasonal rhythm rather than a ladder — you learn to love that or you go back down the hill.
Come the last weekend the lifts spin — usually deep into summer — and ski the morning, swim the afternoon. Then we'll talk.
