A letter from a local
Two lakes downtown and trails all the way out.
Madison is built on an isthmus between two lakes, so the water is not a trip — it's the commute view. I paddle Mendota's south shore before work all summer, and the Lake Loop road ride is a civic institution. This is routinely ranked a top-five U.S. bike city and it earns it: you can cross the whole metro on paths.
Quarry Ridge and CamRock's singletrack sit ten to twenty-five minutes out; Devil's Lake's quartzite bluffs — the Midwest's best climbing and its prettiest state park — are fifty minutes north. Winter turns the lakes into ice-fishing villages and the parks into groomed ski loops; Tyrol Basin's little hill keeps the turns honest forty minutes west.
University energy, a serious farmers market, midwestern housing math. The winters are long. The town refuses to hibernate, and eventually so do you.
