A letter from a local

Glacier is the neighbor. Act normal.

West Glacier is thirty-five minutes from my driveway. That sentence does most of the work: a million acres of the wildest country in the lower 48 — Going-to-the-Sun Road, grizzly valleys, alpine walls — as a day-use amenity.

Closer in, the Foys to Blacktail trails roll off Herron Park ten minutes from town, Flathead Lake's sailing-postcard water is fifteen, Whitefish Mountain's lifts twenty-five, and the Flathead River's three forks hold native cutthroat in every direction. Winter is real; the valley leans in rather than hiding.

Kalispell is the working hub of the valley — hospital, airport, trades — which means you live at Montana prices while the resort crowd pays Whitefish rates twenty minutes north.
