A letter from a local
Trailheads at the end of Last Chance Gulch.
Mount Helena rises straight off downtown — city park to 5,468-foot summit, an hour round trip I do most weekdays. The South Hills network wraps seventy-plus miles of singletrack around town, and a free summer shuttle even hauls bikes to the ridgetops.
The Missouri below Holter Dam — the Land of the Giants stretch — is thirty-five minutes north and holds some of the highest trout counts in Montana. Great Divide's scrappy lifts spin thirty minutes west, and the Gates of the Mountains' limestone canyon takes the summer boat days.
It's Montana's quiet capital: government-steady work, a gold-rush downtown, zero tourist gloss. The mountains here are simply part of the errand loop.
