A letter from a local

The parks nobody counts are an hour away.

Fresno's deal is proximity nobody credits: Yosemite's south entrance, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia all sit roughly ninety minutes from town. I've stood under El Capitan on a random Tuesday morning and been home for dinner. Shaver Lake and the Sierra foothill trails start closer to an hour.

In town, the San Joaquin River Parkway and the bluff trails carry the daily runs and rides, and China Peak's lifts spin about ninety minutes up Highway 168 in winter. The Kings River hands you trout water and spring rafting on the way.

Summer is hot, no arguing. But this is the cheapest address in California with three national parks in day-trip range — the value play of the whole map.
