A letter from a local
The lake sets the schedule.
Lake Coeur d'Alene is the town's front lawn — Tubbs Hill's forested shoreline loop starts a block from downtown, and five minutes later I'm paddling water so clear you watch osprey shadows cross the bottom.
Canfield Mountain's trail network handles the after-work rides fifteen minutes out, the Route of the Hiawatha's rail-trail tunnels are an hour east, and winter splits between Silver Mountain's gondola (45 minutes) and Schweitzer's big terrain (75). The chain of lakes fishes all year.
It's northern Idaho's polished corner — resort-town pretty, small-city practical, four true seasons. Summer evenings on that lake explain the whole thing better than I can.
