A letter from a local

A real city with sandstone in its pockets.

Chattanooga is the cheat code: an actual city — gig-speed internet before it was cool, a riverfront downtown, real jobs — ringed by sandstone cliffs. The Tennessee Wall has more five-star crack climbing than most western destinations, fifteen minutes from my office. Foster Falls, Stone Fort bouldering, Sunset Park on Lookout where you literally climb at golden hour above the city.

The Ocoee — Olympic whitewater — is an hour out. Raccoon Mountain's singletrack loops above the river ten minutes from downtown. Hang gliders launch off Lookout most clear evenings, which still makes me pull over and watch.

Software, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing — the job market is the deepest of any climbing town in America, full stop. You don't trade career for crag here. You just stop choosing.

Come in November when the leaves drop and the sandstone gets sticky. Sunset session at the bluff, tacos on the north shore after. The South will sneak up on you.
