A letter from a local

The capital nobody notices, the access everybody wants.

Carson sits in the crease between the Sierra and the high desert: the Ash to Kings trail network climbs out of the west-side neighborhoods, and thirty minutes up Highway 50 you crest at Spooner Lake, where the Flume Trail hangs a thousand feet over Lake Tahoe's east shore — the most scandalous view in Nevada.

Heavenly and Mt. Rose are both about forty minutes; the Carson River runs warm and easy for summer floats; and C Hill's flag marks the standing lunch-run. Sunday you're bouldering in the sagebrush; Monday you're at your desk by eight.

State-capital stability, Nevada tax math, none of Tahoe's price tag — eleven years and the commute to paradise still takes half an hour.
