A letter from a local

Big sky is not a slogan, it is a daily event.

Bozeman pulls off a trick I haven't seen anywhere else: a real economy — optics, photonics, software, a university — inside a valley where the Bridgers throw cold smoke powder twenty minutes from campus. My standup is at 9. The ridge hike starts at 5:45. Both happen.

Winter is the famous part: Bridger's chutes, Big Sky an hour south when you want the big-mountain day. But the rivers are the secret — the Gallatin, the Madison, the Yellowstone, all within an hour, all stuffed with trout, and Yellowstone Park itself ninety minutes door to geyser.

It's grown fast, and locals grumble — then drive eleven minutes to a trailhead and recover. The thing that hasn't changed: this is a town where the barista, the physicist, and the carpenter are all checking the same snow report.

Come in February. If a Bridger ridge lap with the valley lights coming on below doesn't close the deal, nothing I say will.
