A letter from a local
The foothills start where the sidewalks end.
Boise's trick is the Ridge to Rivers system — 200-plus miles of foothills trail that begin, literally, at the ends of north-end streets. I leave from my porch, ride two hours of smooth high-desert singletrack, and I'm home before the coffee's cold.
The river is the other half: the Boise Whitewater Park sits right downtown with a surf wave that runs most of the year, and the Greenbelt carries you 25 miles along the water. Winter, Bogus Basin is 16 twisty miles up the hill — a nonprofit ski area with night skiing, forty minutes door to chair.
It's the most livable version of this life I know: real jobs, mild winters, a downtown you'd actually use. The secret got out years ago. It's still worth it.
