A letter from a local
The Kern is the whole argument.
Twenty minutes northeast of town, the Kern River Canyon closes in and the Sierra starts being serious. The lower Kern runs warm rafting water all summer; the upper river is trout country under granite domes. That canyon is why I've stayed fifteen years.
In town, the Kern River Parkway path runs 30-odd miles of cottonwood shade for bikes and runs, and Wind Wolves Preserve — the West Coast's largest nonprofit preserve — opens 29,000 acres of wildflower hills forty minutes south. Alta Sierra's tiny lifts and the southern Sierra trailheads sit about ninety minutes up the canyon.
Nobody moves here for the brand. They move for a paid-off house and a river canyon, and they keep both.
